In early 2019, Edwin Blok-van Enck, Product Marketer for Bright Talent of Eindhoven City, invited me via LinkedIn to participate in the 2019 Dutch Design Week with other promising young designers worldwide. I accepted the invitation and felt honored to be part of this gathering.
During my five-day immersion in Eindhoven, I experienced the vibrant and creative lifestyle of the city. My host, Lara de Geef, a teacher at Eindhoven University of Technology, exemplified the city’s ethos of trust, respect, and positivity. She generously provided me with her house keys, access to her home, and a bike, reflecting the welcoming nature of Eindhoven.
The group was paired with local hosts for a “couch surfing” experience, exploring the city as insiders. Mornings began with a communal breakfast and discussion, followed by securing bikes in the university’s common parking area. The prevalence of biking highlighted its significance in Dutch culture. The day was spent collectively uncovering the Deutch Design Week until evening, immersing in the experience as a unified group.
Eventough Sebastian and Thijs were my best buddies.

The Eindhoven University of Technology, founded under the wing of the Philips family, is known for its technology-driven focus. Students learn to design simple to complex items with embedded sensors and microprocessors. Exams are taken in common areas, turning the experience into a shared learning opportunity. The university’s students are not only dedicated to studies but also manage a cafeteria that operates with the sophistication of one found in Milan. It is called Hubble Community Café.
Despite the busy schedule, there was still time to explore the city.
While in Eindhoven, we didn’t visit typical coffee shops, but we did experience the vibrant nightlife. Every night, we had the freedom to explore the city, enjoying activities like night biking and clubbing.
After an amazing five days, it was time to say goodbye, but a surprise awaited. Edwin and his team organized a wonderful dinner at the city’s fanciest restaurant.

Eindhoven is a city where you can just be yourself, no need to pretend to be cool.
